‘Rising Stars 2018’

Artist Profile: Jasper Pedyo

Artist Profile: Jasper Pedyo

Jasper Pedyo graduated from Leeds Arts University in 2018 with a BA Hons. in Fine Art. Jasper was the overall winner at the Free range graduate show at the Truman Brewery selected by a panel of industry experts. He was also the critic’s choice graduate for the Financial Times. Jasper Pedyo’s paintings are highly influenced by the philosophy of Alexander Baumgarten, who coined the term ‘aesthetics’ in 1735. Aestheticism, to Jasper, is very important. Whilst combining influences from Pop Art and minimalism they “intend to provide viewer with an environment of visual bliss; the work’s purpose is to be experienced solely with an instinctive and  physical response to its structure, colour, and surrounding space.”

Jixuan Chen graduated from Wimbledon College of Art with a BA Hons. in Fine Art Painting in 2018. He will be continuing his artistic studies at the Royal College of Art.

‘The concept of my painting is about how to bring the Chinese traditional painting styles and incorporating modern or contemporary ideas. By using a very traditional Chinese approach and something that’s more modern. I also deal with storytelling and narrative with a certain degree of autobiography, to combine with other new media – print.’

Artist Profile: Elizabeth Leonard

Elizabeth studied BA Fine Art at the University of Hertfordshire in 2018. She has been chosen with a select few to feature in the ‘Platform Graduate Award Exhibition 2018’, which selects the finest graduates from the south east region.
My practice explores the balance between weight, tension and materiality whilst relating to the human condition and dependency within relationships. I am drawn to the way small objects are often overlooked and their useful designs taken for granted. Undervalued objects are extracted from everyday life and transformed into intense situations within my works, by altering their initial purpose, manipulating their original forms and upscaling their original size to create a confusing and shocking experience for viewers. The use of fragile balloons with solid metal rods portrays the stability and balance between strength and delicacy. When combining soft and hard objects, restriction and compression occurs, thus creating tension which pushes the fragility of the balloons to their limits.’
