Artist Profile: Rex Southwick

Rex Southwick graduated from Leeds Arts University with a BA Hons. in Fine Art in 2018. Rex’s paintings are often done from memory and use highly stylised modernist architecture. This is broken up by a favourite motif from nature namely the Phoenix genus of palm tree. They have also been chosen not only as a compositional device but for their historical and contemporary nature. Swimming pools also often feature as they represent the exploration of ideas around aspiration, climate and perceived domestic ideals. The depiction of tradesmen is intended to juxtapose the salubrious and dominant idealised surroundings and force you to consider how people interact with the environment.
